Another iPhone 4G release date speculation

Another iPhone 4G release date speculation

There is still no official release date for the iPhone 4G. But there is speculation that Apple will ‘announce’ the next generation iPhone 4G during the Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) late June 2010 – the much anticipated iPhone 4G release date is as much a speculation as the WWDC dates which shows how difficult it is to pinpoint when it is.

Even if Apple announces the iPhone 4G at the 2010 WWDC in late June/early July, how late in the summer will preorders start and when will the iPhone 4G hit the shelves at Apple stores? Your guess is as good as mine!

The rumor is that the iPhone 4G release date will be sometime summer 2010. It is also rumored that the next-gen iPhone will have a new faster coprocessor. But with the news that Beceem is shipping a new 4G chip in Q2 of the year 2011, then the iPhone 4G release date may not include the 4G chip. (iPhone 4G Release Date)

There have also been reports that there are some iPhone 4G models spotted in the wild as reported by

Here is an interesting statement:
TUAW points out one interesting possibility: The keynote would mark the debut of a new iPhone exactly three years later than the release of the first, which many suspect is when Apple’s exclusive contract with AT&T ends. If true, the timing seems remarkably suited for the announcement of a new partnership with another provider, be it Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint.” (the AppleBlog)

In January, more rumors of the Verizon-iPhone partnership surfaced with reports like this: “Verizon iPhone unveiling next week?” Where the iPhone 4G will be available through Verizon in June 2010.

Here’s my take:
The ATT / Apple 3 year contract ends in 3rd quarter 2010. If the WWDC is in late June, the announcement of the iPhone 4G release date will be made in summer, with a release date sometime 3Q 2010, in order for people to get their iPhone/Verizon contract going from the get-go.

It would be interesting to spend a lot of money on a marketing campaign for iPhone users who have anticipated the Verizon partnership for years BEFORE Apple and Verizon set up their deal won’t it? I, for one, am waiting for Verizon to offer iPhone contracts so that I can switch over.

If all the rumors come true, this is, in summary, how the next few months will unfold.

People will be forced to go with ATT for their new iPad and iPhone 3Gs no matter what due to ATT 3G service till Fall.

Apple will announce the iPhone 4G release date at the WWDC in late June.

By Q3 2010, ATT & Apple’s 3-year contract will expire opening the floodgates for new and old iPhone users to buy contracts with Verizon.

Therefore, sometime September thru the end of the year, the iPhone 4G will be available for purchase!

Yes, this is still speculation. I’ve heard rumors that with the iPad release, Apple and ATT may have a longer contract going which means iPhone and Verizon will not happen in the near future. And although there is ‘no contract‘ to buy if you have the iPad WiFi+3G, this could be ATT’s way of saying, ‘no contract’ if your iPhone stays with us.

If it does, ATT will be a happy camper! But ‘we’ won’t!

Update: Engadget also reports that the iPhone HD (or whatever it ends up being called), will be announced on Tuesday, June 22. Historically, this date falls in line with past iPhone release dates.
